In November 2016, Kronstadt Engineering company carried out a supply of waterjet propellers manufactured by HamiltonJet to be installed on the 21770 Catran motorboats.
This furnishment is the first in a scheduled series of supplies required for manufacturing of the motorboats by Alexeev's hydrofoil design bureau.
Initially, the 21770 Catran motorboats were designed for assisting in daily operations of parent vessel when it is anchored or during inshore moorings. However, parameters of the series introduced by its designers turned out to allow for using the motorboats as universal vessels (for example, as lifeboats), capable of performing various types of tasks.
For instance, Catran motorboats are operated on the rescue ship "Igor Belousov" built in JSC "Admiralteiskie Verfi", and on the rescue towboat of the 20180 "Zvyozdochka" project.
Installing and operating waterjet propellers by HamiltonJet is a practical and expert solution. As the working body of the waterjet is placed within the vessel hull, any overboard objects are safe from the contact with potentially harmful rotating parts.
Another advantage of these waterjets is that they demonstrate better maneuvering ability when compared to screw-type propellers, which is extremely important in case of emergencies requiring fast response of the rudder system to wheelman's actions.
As per their design specification, the Catran motorboats can achieve the speed of 32 knots, but with waterjet propellers by HamiltonJet installed, the tests show higher speeds can be easily reached. The cruising distance for the Catran series is 100 miles, while the guaranteed sea endurance is 1 day, which is a normal value for ships of this class.
